Saturday Academy

Mission – We will offer free academic enrichment and mentorship to students. We will develop students who will achieve academic and social success. S.T.A.R.S. Math & English Academy seeks to improve the English, math and reading skills of students by at least two grade levels.

Vision – We will prepare every S.T.A.R.S. student with the necessary skills to go to college for free!

Participation Requirements – Each participating child’s parent or guardian must complete a permission form and emergency contact form. It is recommended that a parent or teacher list the child’s area(s) for academic improvement.

General Information – We serve students in grades 3-12. Students are divided into three groups: grades 3 through 5, grades 6 through 8, and grades 9 through 12. Parents must sign their children in and out of the facility for each S.T.A.R.S. Math & English Academy program session. A sign-in table will be located at the S.T.A.R.S. program entrance door at each facility.

Saturday Academy Logistics – The academy is located at the Ivory Baker Recreational Center 1920 Stroud Park Court Charlotte, NC 28206. Sessions are held on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. for grades 3-8, and 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for grades 9-12. If parents or guardians would like to stay while their children are in the sessions, they are asked to wait in the lobby.

Learning Materials – Each student is presented with an interactive notebook to keep notes and handouts. English and math lessons will be conducted from the S.T.A.R.S. Math & English Academy curriculum, which is based on the Common Core curriculum. Dictionaries, thesauruses, stationery, and other resource materials will be available at the Saturday Academy locations.

Academy format

Math and English Lesson 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: The students will be divided into three groups (grades 3 through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through 12) and will be taught one lesson in English or math. There will be one instructor per grade. Students will be given a snack from 10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Tutoring 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: If students bring schoolwork, they will be given hands-on tutoring in their school subjects. Tutoring will end at 12:00 p.m. Tutors All tutors are certified teachers. Any individual willing to tutor must fill out a general information form and pass a background check. Educational packets are available to refresh tutors on some of the subjects in which they tutor. Each tutor meets with the site director prior to each tutoring session.
