Prior to joining the S.T.A.R.S. Academy, each student must turn in copies of their previous report cards and EOG test scores. Each parent must fill out an extensive application and emphasize areas of need for each student. These materials serve as a performance baseline and provide a focal point for instruction. Additionally, pre‐tests in Math, English, and writing provide baseline data for the instructors. Results are tracked over the term of the session using performance logs and parental feedback. S.T.A.R.S. instructors maintain regular contact with the parents of each student. The teaching staff pays close attention to the progress of each young person over the course of the program. Based on their observations, instructors accelerate those who are ready for more challenging work and provide repetition and explanations for those who are trying to catch or keep up. However, in the end, all the educators and tutors at S.T.A.R.S. hold the participants accountable for their own progress.
